Good things often happen unexpectedly…<\/strong><\/p>

We met Christian Shejbal<\/strong> at a trade fair many years ago and we have worked with him on various projects<\/strong> over the years; \nChristian – a great connoisseur of bulbs<\/strong> – is the owner of Floriana Bulbose (on Instagram @floriana.bulbose<\/a><\/strong>), \na beautiful nursery on the outskirts of Rome<\/strong> that boasts a very important collection of unusual bulbs<\/strong>.<\/p>

Simonetta Chiarugi<\/strong> is a blogger<\/strong> from Genoa<\/strong> who, after a career in the Milanese fashion world, \n<\/strong>decided to devote herself full-time<\/strong> to her passion for gardening<\/strong> in 2006. \n \nOn social media, on her much-followed Instagram profile @aboutagarden<\/a><\/strong>, she offers tips on how to take care of gardens and terraces, \n<\/strong>making home furnishings “from branches, petals and leaves”,<\/strong> \nusing the resources found in green spaces, with a focus on sustainability<\/strong> and aesthetics<\/strong>.<\/p>

And it was on social media that we ‘met’ Simonetta<\/strong>, \nand a very interesting exchange of ideas<\/strong> and inspiration began, \nuntil recently, when we received the news that we would be writing a book with<\/strong>\u00a0with Christian Shejbal<\/strong> on<\/strong> a subject that is very close to both of our hearts: \nBULBOMANIA<\/strong>. \n– which is the very apt title of the book that will be published today –<\/strong> \nabout four bulbous plants in particular: tulips, daffodils, snowdrops and hyacinths.<\/strong><\/p>

We were very intrigued by the project<\/strong>, which we had guessed to be very interesting, given Christian<\/strong> Shejbal’s encyclopaedic<\/strong> knowledge<\/strong> of<\/strong> the subject ‘Bulbs<\/strong>‘ and Simonetta Chiarugi’s particular<\/strong>, curious and narrative touch<\/strong>.<\/p>

It was Simonetta herself that we chatted with<\/strong> over the last few days; because we were curious to learn more<\/strong> about some aspects of the book, first of all why she chose to present four types of bulbs in particular<\/strong>, and here is her answer:<\/p>

<\/p>

“We chose the four types of bulbs<\/strong> – tulips, narcissus, snowdrops and hyacinths – that have been of interest in history and economics<\/strong>, starting with the tulip<\/strong>, which was the subject of the first economic bubble<\/strong>“.<\/em><\/p>

<\/p>

This is really interesting news that even we were unaware of and, doing a little research, we discovered that in the 1600s<\/strong> in Holland there was the first economic speculation<\/strong> centred on tulip bulbs!<\/p>

<\/p>

Who is this book for?<\/em><\/strong> \nExperts like you, or even those who call themselves ‘black thumbs’?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

“There is no<\/strong> such thing as a black thumb, it is only the interest and attention that one devotes to the plant<\/strong> that makes the difference. Bulbomania<\/a><\/strong> is aimed at both beginners and experts, as it contains, in addition to technical data, food for thought and decoration for their use.”<\/em><\/p>

<\/p>

From our point of view, it is really interesting to understand how to match pots to plants, following not only the aesthetics of the final result, but above all the needs of the plant; will we find some useful hints on Bulbomania in this regard?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>

<\/p>

“A section of the book is devoted precisely to the choice of pots,<\/strong> as bulbs lend themselves very well to being grown in containers.<\/em><\/p>

Poggi Ugo pots<\/strong>, in all their shapes, are perfect for growing flower bulbs<\/strong>, both for their aesthetics<\/strong> and for their weight<\/strong>.<\/em> \nIn fact, many bulbs grow tall and tend to topple over when grown in containers that are too light,<\/em> \nin strong winds.<\/em> \nMy advice is to choose pots that are heavy enough, not necessarily tall,<\/strong><\/em> \nas the bulb does not have a deep root system.<\/em><\/p>

Here’s a decorative tip:<\/strong><\/em> \nGroup at least three of different sizes but the same shape<\/strong> close together and fill them well with bulbs for a WOW effect!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>

The watchword with bulbs is to overdo it!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>

<\/p>

Which pots did you choose for them and why?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>

<\/p>

“I chose the classic<\/strong> \nLiscio<\/a>, Due Orli<\/a> and Pejrone pots<\/a><\/strong> \nbecause I personally like clean,<\/strong> flared<\/strong> shapes<\/strong> where the ornaments are not predominant, because they slender the plants and make them the protagonists<\/strong>.”<\/p>
