GrigioLava: the colour of terracotta between tradition and contemporaneity

Visione di vasi in terracotta color GrigioLava

In the Poggi Ugo kiln, the earth speaks, changes, transforms.

In the Poggi Ugo kiln, the earth speaks, changes, transforms.
From this continuous research came GrigioLava, a unique colour born from the encounter between nature and craftsmanship. Inspired by raw earth left to dry in the kiln, GrigioLava recaptures that dark, textured and deep grey that tells of the very origin of terracotta.
It is a colour that does not rest on the surface: it runs through the entire thickness of the pot, guaranteeing authentic durability and a beauty that evolves with time.
This is GrigioLava: frost-resistant, alive, and designed for architects, landscapers, designers, hotels and all those who wish to make their spaces unique.

The birth of GrigioLava

To the pure Impruneta clay – extracted from the quarry next to the Poggi Ugo kiln – we add two natural oxides:

one gives the colour
the other stabilises the colour.

The quantity is minimal compared to the clay powder, but sufficient to bring about a radical change. It is in the kiln, during firing, that the oxides react and give rise to the grey shade that we have christened GrigioLava, precisely to emphasise the lively, textural and changeable character of products made in this variant.

A colour that lives and changes

GrigioLava was born in the Poggi Ugo kiln from the union of Impruneta clay and natural oxides.
Its uniqueness lies in its ability to change over time: the surface oxidises naturally and the vase mutates, taking on new shades and telling its story.
It is never static, but alive.

What makes GrigioLava special is not just its colour, but its ability to evolve with time.

Tradition and contemporaneity

GrigioLava has a dual soul:
On the one hand, it recalls stone tones, finding its natural place in historical and traditional contexts.
On the other, thanks to its neutrality and authentic strength, it becomes the ideal partner for contemporary and minimalist projects, where grey dialogues with concrete, steel and glass.
A bridging colour, uniting different worlds without ever imposing itself.

From the Smooth Vase to Contemporary Design

To narrate this transformation, we have chosen an icon: the Vaso Liscio di Impruneta.
An absolute classic of our tradition which, in GrigioLava version, acquires an extra gear.

Its harmonious profile, which everyone recognises, becomes the protagonist of a fascinating contrast:
the historical shape meets a new, sober and modern colour.
It is the perfect example of how GrigioLava is capable of rewriting the language of terracotta, remaining true to its roots but projecting into the future.

Lighter than stone, more versatile than metal

Compared to other natural materials, GrigioLava offers unique advantages.
It is reminiscent of the oxidisation of lead vases or ancient metals, but with infinitely superior modelling possibilities.
Terracotta allows the creation of complex shapes, refined details and complete collections without sacrificing durability.

A living material for unique projects

Whether for large projects (hotels, restaurants, public spaces), private gardens or terraces, GrigioLava carries a strong and concrete character.

GrigioLava has been conceived to offer you a colour alternative, without renouncing the very high quality of Poggi Ugo terracotta; it is designed for your furnishings, for your projects, for YOU: architects, landscape architects, interior designers and lovers of authentic materials.

From the classic Vaso Liscio di Impruneta, reinterpreted in GrigioLava, to more sophisticated shapes, each piece becomes a symbol of harmonious contrast: tradition and modernity coming together.
