Jar. The most typical and ancient of all Impruneta products, commonly referred to as a jar. Once used as a container for wine or oil, which were abundantly produced in the Florentine hills. The jars were glazed on the inside to be waterproof and to store food for long periods. They were used for containing oil, wine, vinegar, as well as grain, cheese, cured meats, and bread. With their egg-shaped form and small mouth, a small lid was sufficient to protect the contents. Additionally, due to the specific characteristics of terracotta, the contents were shielded from sunlight, maintaining a cool temperature inside during the day and protected from humidity or dry climates. They were practically perfect for preserving and protecting food over time. Today, they are essential decor in gardens. Jars, or “ziri,” have a long history as containers and were made in many regions, which is why they are known by different names: orcio, ziro, otre, anfora, giara, giarra, coppo, doglio, pignatta, ampolla, barile, olla. Jars are decorative objects; due to their narrow-mouthed design, they are not well-suited for direct planting. They are often used as plant holders, or it is customary to place bowls with seasonal flowers on their mouths. In cold regions, it is advisable to protect them with lids during winter, which are also typical reproductions of local cellars. Handcrafted from Impruneta clay, they are freeze-resistant to -30°C. Good drainage is always necessary to avoid water stagnation. Jars are also commonly used as containers for reclaimed or stored water. They are excellent containers and aesthetically pleasing, serving as a natural and eco-friendly water reserve for watering gardens, plants, and washing items. Accessories: lid with knob.
