Lid with Knob. This item is an accessory that has a very ancient history. The Lid with Knob is a closure that has been used in the cellar since ancient times. In the cellars, jars were used to contain liquids such as wine and oil for a long time, but all food products in general were also stored. To close jars that had a fairly large mouth, terracotta lids were used. Sometimes wooden lids were used, but terracotta was preferred due to its weight, long life and because it did not release odors. When used for wine fermentation, a hole was made in the center of the knob to insert a glass bottle to provide the right oxygenation. Today the lid with knob is mainly used as a closure on the outside. Jars, cache-pots or other decorative containers that do not have plants are usually left without special attention and often fill with water. In the summer, water stagnation is created where colonies of mosquitoes proliferate and in the winter the water that turns to freeze can cause problems and even break the containers. The right size lid prevents rainwater from entering objects and avoids complications. It is always good practice to check that the containers are empty, but with the use of the lid the risk of water entering the objects is minimal. In the summer period the lid can be turned upside down with the knob facing inwards, and thus serves as a surface to place a vase or bowl with a beautiful flower on top.
